Our July gathering was Thursday, July 16.
We took the opportunity to relax and enjoy some great fellowship with a casual EAA 288 Hot Dog Supper for members, family, and guests. The chapter provided hot dogs with all the fixings, chips, and bottled water—at no cost! Some members brought their favorite side dish, picnic salad, or dessert to share. After dinner, at 7:00 PM, Jim Stone and John Foster presented a valuable Safety Briefing. ********************************************************************************************
Thursday, June 18 was our June gathering.
Scott Main, our VP, led the gathering as President Steve was out of town. Scott started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. He then went on to acknowledge the new members to the Chapter (names to follow at a later date) and acknowledge 288's John Poe and his grandsons Aiden Bond who soloed on June 4th and Andrew Poe who soloed June 16th.
Congratulations to both of them on their outstanding achievement.
John Foster encouraged everyone to send in their proxy for EAA 288's Rick Weiss to be voted onto the Board of EAA National. Scott then asked for members to think about becoming the Chapter Historian. Next up was our main presenter for the evening, Jeff Edwards. Jeff, a very experienced and skilled Navy pilot went on to become a USAir/American Airlines pilot and retired to Spruce Creek in 2010. Jeff, an RV-8 owner, had a recent inflight emergency and described in excellent detail the when, where and how he handled the subsequent forced landing.
He also went into a depth discussion of the problem that caused the engine failure. See below for pictures of the gathering. (more to follow soon)

The Chapter288 March 21, 2026 Taxi-in was a success! Here's a note from Steve about it:
Good afternoon Spruce Creek
As of 5:30 PM on Saturday, March 21, 2026, we’ve wrapped up another very successful day at our 4th Annual EAA Chapter 288 Taxi-In.
We had nearly 90 aircraft on display, including helicopters, vintage aircraft, sport aircraft, homebuilt projects, newly completed kits, and some impressive factory aircraft—including a Beaver and a Cirrus jet. While we didn’t get an exact count of attendees on foot, the turnout was clearly strong. If the food sales are any indication, the Scouts served more than 400 hamburgers!
An event like this doesn’t happen without a tremendous team effort. As the new Chapter President, I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all of our volunteers for the outstanding job you did. Special thanks to John Foster and the marshalling team, Rob McFadden and the CERT team, Spruce Creek Security, Andi Morey, all participating pilots, and most importantly—you, our friends and neighbors.
This is truly a special community—one that’s hard to replicate. It’s incredibly rewarding to share our passion for aviation with our families, friends, and neighbors. We’re also especially grateful to those who generously allowed us to use their ramps—your support made a big difference.
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.
Until next year—good flying,
Steve Bryk
President EAA Chapter 288
The Chapter 288 gathering/meeting was held on Thursday, March 19 at 7:00 PM in the chapter hangar and we shared several exciting things at the meeting:
But first we started off off with a salute and video tribute to all our EAA288 veterans who served in the ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINES, and COAST GUARD. We then pledged allegiance to our new and beautiful American Flag.
Keith, our Board of Directors Chairman, gave a brief overview of the history of our Chapter, dating back to the 1980's. This was followed by Rick Weiss discussing our newly found By-Laws document and the need for the membership to officially vote the new potential officers into office. The membership voted 100% to elect the new officers, and so - it is now official: Steve Bryk is the new President, Scott Main is the 1st.V.P., Rick Weiss is the 2nd VP (and Webmaster), the new treasurer is T.J. Shembecker, while the position of Secretary remains temporarily vacant.
Steve then took the floor and began the gathering. (the view graphs will be available on the website soon)
The brand-new hangar floor: was big improvement to our space and something many members have helped make possible.
We discussed our plans and goals for 2026 and discussed the upcoming activities, events and discussed opportunities for members to get involved.
John Foster gave an excellent overview of the details about our upcoming 4th Annual Taxi-In event: including how members can participate and help make it another great success.

ON OCCASION, EAA288 RECOGNIZES OUR VETERANS SERVICE WITH A QUILT OF VALOR
Quilts of Valor Explained
Florida state coordinator,Terry Burtchell (also a Spruce Creek resident says The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a dream, literally a dream. Founder Catherine Roberts’ son Nat was deployed in Iraq. According to Catherine: The dream was as vivid as real life. I saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over. The permeating feeling was one of utter despair. I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in the next scene wrapped in a quilt. His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and well-being. The quilt had made this dramatic change. The message of my dream was: Quilts = Healing.

OUR VISION FOR OUR FUTURE
** Some Big News for Chapter 288 **
I very pleased to announce that we have secured a very favorable five-year lease for our new Chapter 288 home, with a strong opportunity for an extension as long as we continue to build something that our members and the community value, support, and enjoy.
This gives us something very important: stability and the ability to plan for the future.
The positive response to our new home and the direction of the chapter has been tremendous. But we're just getting started.
Some of the major improvements are underway, our priorities for the facility, and the events and programs we're planning from September through December and beyond.
Most importantly, these priorities didn't come from just a few people. They are based largely on the ideas and recommendations you gave us through our volunteer planning teams when we began developing the vision for the new Chapter 288.
Please keep those ideas coming. This is your chapter and your chapter home.
** Now We Need Your Help **
Building the chapter and facility we have envisioned requires more than ideas and volunteers — it also requires financial support.
You may have recently received our fundraising appeal. Several very generous members have stepped forward and offered to match member contributions up to $30,000.
That means every dollar contributed can potentially become two dollars for Chapter 288.
To date, we have received approximately $7,000 toward that $30,000 matching opportunity. We have a significant amount of matching money still available, and I would hate to see us leave any of it unused.
Our goal isn't simply to pay today's bills. We want to fund the improvements and programs we have planned while also beginning to establish a building fund that strengthens Chapter 288 for years to come.
We are the largest EAA chapter in the world, and I believe we have one of the most talented and experienced memberships anywhere. We have an opportunity to build something equally exceptional — a world-class chapter facility with programs, education, activities, and resources that our members and community can be proud of.
If you haven't participated in the campaign yet, I hope you will consider doing so. Every contribution matters, regardless of the amount. With the matching commitment, your participation can have twice the impact. We are a C3 corporation so ALL of your donations are tex deductible. You will get a donation receipt. If you have already participated thank you for your contribution.
Finally, I want you to know how much I personally appreciate the encouragement, ideas, volunteer hours, and support you've given me and the chapter.
I genuinely enjoy being part of this community and working alongside all of you. We have accomplished a great deal in a short period of time, and I'm even more excited about where we're headed.
Today, we are launching a focused fundraising campaign to complete several important upgrades to our hangar and meeting space improvements that will benefit every member and strengthen the chapter for years to come.
We are also fortunate to have a few generous members who have stepped forward with a matching donation challenge. Every dollar contributed to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar (up to their limit), doubling the impact of your support. This rare opportunity allows us to accelerate improvements while honoring the commitment and generosity of our membership.
Immediate Facility Enhancements
Your contributions will fund the following upgrades:
1. Expanded Air Conditioning & Heating for the Meeting Area
Our meeting space is the heart of Chapter 288. Adding additional climate control will make gatherings more comfortable year-round, encourage more frequent use of the facility, and improve the experience for members and guests.
2. Relocation of the Two FAA-Approved Simulators
We will move both FAA-approved simulators from the hangar across the street into a conditioned, secure, modern space within our main building. This will make them more accessible, better protected, and available for training, proficiency, and youth programs.
3. Build Out and Furnish the Pilots Lounge
The carpeted area at the front left of the building will retain its own dedicated entrance. This area will include a new, glass-walled room to house the two existing FAA-approved simulators. The office will be used for the entertainment simulators and secured storage. The remaining space will be converted into a welcoming members lounge available at any time. We plan to set up a large-screen TV, and add comfortable chairs, possibly one or two computers for flight planning, and TVs that display activities in the Simulator rooms. Additional entertainment options like darts and refreshments will also be included.
4. New Exterior Entry Door
An additional entry door to the outside leading directly into the meeting hall will improve, people flow, security , accessibility, and ease of use during meetings and events.
5. New Wider Interior Doorway
A new, wider door will be installed between the office space and the meeting room. The existing door will be repurposed to lead into the new Simulator Room.
6. Setup of Two Donated Entertainment Simulators
We recently received two high-quality entertainment simulators to be installed in the smaller office room. One simulator is a G1000 sim for GA pilots who want to have fun. The second simulator features military controls and can be configured for helicopter simulation, complete with quality throttle, cyclic control, and seat. Both simulators include impressive controls and will serve as a “Pilot’s Lounge” experience—where members can learn from F-18 pilots, fly an F-18, F-16, A-10, etc., or take the G1000 simulator for a spin. One of these simulators will require a new computer and rudder pedals, which may be included in this fundraising effort.
Why These Improvements Matter
These enhancements will:
* Make our hangar a more comfortable and frequently used gathering place.
* Expand training opportunities for members, students, and Young Eagles
* Support the chapter’s long-term vision for STEM education.
* Strengthening our community by creating more reasons to come together
* Improve security and functionality of our facility.
* Lay the groundwork for future growth.
During our members’ workshops earlier this year, the majority of attendees expressed strong support for expanding STEM programs, improving the tool crib, and establishing a long-term building fund. These immediate upgrades are the first step toward that larger vision.
Once these short-term needs are met, we will begin the next phase of fundraising to support long-term sustainability—ensuring Chapter 288 can continue to grow, maintain its own project space, expand STEM offerings, and build a facility that serves future generations of aviators.
Your Support Matters—And It’s Doubled
With your tax deductible matching donation challenge now in place, your contribution may have twice the impact. Whether you give $50, $500, $5,000 or $50,0000, your donation will directly support improvements that benefit every member and strengthen the chapter’s future.
We invite you to join us in this effort. Together, we can build a facility that reflects the passion, skill, and generosity of EAA Chapter 288.
Thank you for your continued support, your involvement, and your commitment to aviation and community.
The link for online one-time or recurring donations is here:
https://donorbox.org/eaa-288-chapter-facility-improvements?mc_cid=ded6fbd343&mc_eid=UNIQID
Note that all donations are tax deductible and the chapter will provide you donation receipts which you can use for tax purposes.
Blue skies,
EAA Chapter 288

CHAPTER 288 IMC MEETINGS
Meetings will be announced. They are currently on hold.
This is a great opportunity to sharpen your Instrument flying. There will be spirited discussions led by David Gall, experience ATC controller. Come and add you expertise to the group discussions.
These meetings will help you be a better instrument pilot. There will be scenarios discussed that challenge your understanding of the IMC processes. Your participation in the group discussions will help you and the rest of the participants improve. If your IMC experience is a bit rusty this will remove some of that rust. Please come and make the meeting a great one. We will make you better IMC pilots, and you can help. Just show up with your experiences. We will publish the date of the next meeting as soon as we determine it.
The event is open to all and will focus on Instrument flying issues. There will be opportunities to discuss scenarios that you may encounter and how to handle them. This is also a great opportunity to polish up your understanding of IFR flying.
IMC BACKGROUND:
The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying, proficiency, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share information, provide recognition, foster communications, promote safety, and build proficiency in instrument flying. IMC Club chapters offer monthly meetings in which pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences.
The chapter resources and scenarios are being produced and distributed as a new program by EAA IMC LLC (“EAA IMC”), an Experimental Aircraft Association Inc. subsidiary, under a license from IMC Club International Inc. This will provide resources for new and improved program offerings that will enhance and expand the impact of the IMC concept and to provide continuity, support, direction, and programming,
All instrument pilots are welcome including wannabes and others looking to gain knowledge when the windscreen becomes milky and the vis disappears. We all can learn from the workshop discussions concerning the presented scenarios.
You do not need to be an EAA288 member, but it would be nice and we welcome you to join the EAA. To join; Go the the "more" tab at the top of the website and select "PAY DUES", or click on the link on the HOME PAGE. All pilots are always welcome.
If you have any questions, please contact Barry Dainas at (847) 477-8486 or bdainas@yahoo.com

Meetings will be announced as they are currently on hold.
I HAVE AN EMAIL LIST FROM THE LAST MEETING, IF YOU WANT A PERSONAL REMINDER FOR FUTURE MEETINGS PLEASE SEND MY YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS TO PRESIDENT@EAA288.ORG
Next Meeting: The VMC, designed to help our VFR pilots by discussing situations in a group setting is a key part of the chapter program. The next meeting is TBD. Bring a friend and be ready to discuss VMC issues.
BACKGROUND:
Non-instrument rated pilots who want to improve their proficiency now have an excellent new resource through EAA’s VMC Club.
The VMC Club offers monthly meetings in which pilots can network and share knowledge and experience. The meetings use real-world scenarios to engage members, and allow a free exchange of information that improves awareness and skills. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share information, provide recognition, foster communications, promote safety, and build proficiency. All Chapter 288 members, in good standing, are automatically eligible to take part in the FREE VMC and IMC Club program.
All pilots are always welcome.

NOTE: THESE MEETINGS ARE CURRENTLY ON HOLD
